World Press Photo. La imagen del año.

Si miro hacia atrás y pienso en la primera imagen periodística que recuerdo, no tengo ninguna duda: los ojos de omayra, la niña que quedó atrapada por la lava del nevado del ruiz en colombia. Fue una imagen que recorrió el mundo y que resumía, sin necesidad de mediar palabra, la tragedia de un país. Sobre la noticia se habló y escribió durante semanas; sin embargo, no he recordado nada del tema hasta hoy, que he vuelto a buscar la imagen para escribir este artículo. De la cara de omayra no me faltaba ningún detalle. Tampoco he sabido hasta ahora que con esa instantánea, frank fournier fue premiado con el world press photo del año 1985.
Después de muchos años leyendo prensa, me viene a la cabeza la imagen de mi padre, que se sentaba a leer el periódico conmigo. Lo único que yo hacía era ver las fotos, me extrañaba que mi padre tardase tanto en leerlo, pero poco a poco fui entendiendo cómo funcionaba aquello y por qué me recordaba aquel tópico de la imagen y las mil palabras. Todo gracias a los reporteros gráficos, que a través del prisma de su cámara captan vivencias y sentimientos desde cualquier rincón del mundo para compartirlo con nosotros.
Y a pesar del tópico y de lo evidente, tuvieron que llegar conflictos bélicos como la Guerra Civil Española, las dos Guerras Mundiales o la Guerra de Vietnam para que la prensa escrita cediera un espacio propio a la imagen fotográfica, abriendo paso a lo que desde entonces se denominaría “fotoperiodismo”. Incluso antes, ya destacó Eugenio Mesonero Romanos, considerado uno de los primeros fotoperiodistas españoles, con la imagen del atentado contra Alfonso XIII el día de su boda por parte del anarquista Mateo Morral, tomada en 1906.
Fue entre 1930 y 1950 cuando este tipo de periodismo gráfico adquirió su máximo apogeo, sobre todo durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial y gracias al avance tecnológico en el campo de la fotografía. Periódicos como el Daily Mirror en Inglaterra, Paris Match en Francia o el New York Times en Estados Unidos, resurgieron gracias al trabajo de reporteros como Robert Capa, Erich Salomon o Margaret Bourke-White, que cambiaron el bolígrafo y la libreta por la cámara y el trípode.
Del papel fundamental que juega la imagen a la hora de informar, fueron también conscientes los fundadores de World Press Photo (WPP), una organización independiente y sin ánimo de lucro que desde 1955 convoca cada año el más prestigioso concurso de fotografía de prensa del mundo, el World Press Photo of the Year.
WPP es algo mas que un concurso, es un espacio en el que periodistas gráficos de todo el mundo pueden plasmar sus vivencias y nos muestran de primera mano la realidad en la que vivimos, con imágenes en muchos casos impactantes, desgarradoras y crudas, que desde luego no dejan a nadie indiferente.
Los periodistas gráficos deben tener un temple especial. Muchas veces se enfrentan a situaciones extremas sin poder intervenir en ellas, como meros testigos de la realidad; si no, no podríamos explicarnos cómo, por ejemplo, Frank Fournier pudo retratar a Omayra atrapada entre el fango, el agua y los restos de su propia casa, y no venirse abajo ante la impotencia de la situación.
Sin el trabajo de estos profesionales tampoco seríamos conscientes del hambre y la desnutrición que sufren zonas como Uganda, donde Mike Wells, World Press Photo of the Year en 1980, nos mostró la imagen de un misionero agarrando la mano de un niño a punto de morir de hambre en Karamoja, una mano más propia de un anciano que de un niño.
La actualidad, y por tanto los premios WPP, casi siempre ha venido marcada por conflictos en diferentes lugares del mundo. En 1963 la imagen del monje budista Thich Quang Duc prendiéndose fuego en Saigón en protesta contra la persecución religiosa del gobierno sudvietnamita, nos mostró hasta dónde puede llegar el extremismo del ser humano. En 1968 pudimos ver al jefe de policía sudvietnamita, Nguyen Ngoc Loan, pistola en mano, ejecutando a un sospechoso del Viet Cong en Saigón. Un tanque atropellando a un manifestante durante la revuelta social en la Plaza de Tian´anmenn fue protagonista en 1989.
La foto de 1981 del Teniente Coronel Tejero y varios miembros de la Guardia Civil y la policía militar asaltando el Parlamento en un intento fallido de golpe de estado, dio a Manuel Pérez Barriopedro en 1981 el único World Press Photo of the Year que han conseguido nuestros fotógrafos. Sin embargo, cabe destacar la participación en el concurso de profesionales como Cristina García Rodero, Moisés Saman, Arturo Rodríguez o Lorena Ros.
Los trabajos seleccionados pasan a formar parte de una exposición itinerante que recorre el mundo, y es visitada por 2 millones de personas en unos 45 países. Aquí en Madrid la podremos visitar en el Centro Cultural de Moncloa del 1 al 21 de julio de 2010 (de lunes a domingo de 10 a 14 y de 16 a 20 hs.)
Además, si quieres disfrutar de estas y otras fotografías premiadas en World Press Photo desde 1955, puedes hacerlo en sus dos páginas web, donde la organización ha reunido un archivo con más de 10.000 trabajos con el que nos muestra cómo han evolucionado el fotoperiodismo y nuestra realidad en los últimos 50 años.
